Old Fashioned Coffee Cake AKA Nobody Makes This Anymore

Okay, I should have stuck with my Lemon Heaven Cake that I originally planned on making for Easter Dessert. However, I saw this new recipe and thought DELICIOUS!! WRONG!!!

How could it be wrong though - yummy coffee cake, yummy cherry pie filling, yummy brown sugar topping. ummmmm.... NO.

The cake was okay, nothing fancy. Maybe a bit too sweet. The pie filling came from a can so you really can't go wrong there. The topping was a disaster. Needed way more butter and way less flour - perhaps some oats or something.

Anyway, you can try if you like - it certainly looked great!!!

Old-Fashioned Coffee Cake

2 Cups All purpose flour
1 Cup Granulated sugar
2 tsp Baking powder
1/4 tsp Salt
1/2 Cup Cold butter (or hard margarine), cut up

1 Large egg, fork-beaten
3/4 Cup Milk

19 oz (540 ml) Can Cherry Pie Filling

TOPPING:
1 Cup Brown Sugar, packed
1 Cup All purpose flour
1/2 Cup cold butter (or hard margarine), cut up

Measure first 4 ingredients into large bowl. Stir. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in the centre.

Add egg and milk to well. Stir until just moistened. Spread in greased 9 x 13 inch baking pan.

Carefully spread pie filling on top.

Topping: Combine brown sugar and flour in small bowl. Cut butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle over pie filling. Bake in 375 degrees F for about 40 minutes until top is golden and filling bubbles at edges. Let stand for 10 minutes. Cuts into 15 pieces.

  1. I love coffee cake...and you are right - nobody ever makes it. Perhaps I should make one this weekend...I have a tried and true sour cream coffee cake recipe somewhere.
